Elusive Type Small Diameter Type

1831 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4, MS64 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. The smaller diameter Capped Bust quarter eagles were produced from 1829 to 1834 but only about 25,000 coins were produced for the six years combined. This near-Gem 1831 example is one of 4,520 pieces produced for the year, struck by a single die pair. Perhaps 30 to 45 Mint State examples survive according to Quarter Eagle Gold Coins (2021). Most Uncirculated examples are partially prooflike and sharply struck such as this Choice Uncirculated coin. Coppery-gold color flows evenly across both sides with only a few tiny ticks interrupting the needle-sharp, attractive and lustrous surfaces. NGC Census: 9 in 64 (1 in 64 ), 8 finer (12/25).
