    Description

1831 Capped Bust Left Quarter Eagle, MS63
    BD-1, Reduced Diameter

1831 $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. BD-1, R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. The only dies for the date. According to Garrett and Guth's Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins: "The 1831 quarter eagle is comparable in rarity (and in the number of surviving examples) to the 1830 issue, but the total number of Mint State 1831 examples is higher, as is the general quality." They further explain that the prevalence of mint condition examples and the scarcity of circulated coins indicates that pieces outside of collections were likely destroyed. Of the 4,520 quarter eagles struck, John Dannreuther (2006) estimates that 110 to 125 coins survive in all grades.

This Select representative features warm orange-gold color, vivid luster, and moderate prooflike reflectivity. Liberty's hair curls, as well as the eagle's talons and feathers show strong definition, while a handful of abrasions define the grade. Census: 7 in 63, 20 finer (7/14).(Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# BFWA, PCGS# 7671)

    Weight: 4.37 grams

    Metal: 91.67% Gold, 8.33% Copper
