Description

1831 Quarter Eagle, MS64
BD-1, Early Die State

1831 $2 1/2 MS64 NGC. CAC. BD-1, R.4. Each of the Capped Bust, Small Diameter (or Small Dentils) quarter eagle issues, those dated from 1829-1834 (With Motto), six in all, is known from but a single die pairing. The yearly mintages ranged from a low of 3,403 pieces in 1829 to a high of 4,520 in 1831, and with such tiny production levels there was simply no need for more than one die pair to produce the entire run for each year. In fact, the annual issues dated 1830-1834 were all coined from a single reverse die, paired successively with a newly dated obverse. Although some examples of the 1831 quarter eagle show die clashing (which is obvious when present) and subsequent die lapping (virtually indistinguishable), the present near-Gem appears to be in an early state of each side. The orange-gold surfaces show no mentionable contact marks and display an extremely sharp strike, save for minor weakness at the left (facing) border of the shield. This piece would make an excellent representative to stand for the date or the type. Census: 10 in 64, 5 finer (2/12).
