Description
Richly Colored 1831 Quarter Eagle, MS 63 NGC
1831 $2 1/2 MS 63 NGC. Upon the death of Chief Engraver Robert Scot in 1823, William Kneass entered the service of the Mint with experience as a bank note engraver under his belt. In 1829, Kneass refined the existing quarter eagle design to create a more professional finish. Although only a slight modification of Scot's original conception, Kneass' modified Capped Head Left motif adorned the quarter eagle from 1829 through early 1834. Whether or not one believes that Kneass' refinements enhanced the denomination's artistic merit, there is little doubt that the present coin is absolutely stunning in terms of numismatic desirability. Sharply impressed, not a single star centril, hair strand, or feather has been lost to striking deficiency. The beautiful prooflike faces display memorable preservation for the assigned grade and are at the threshold of a near-Gem assessment. Both sides exhibit thick, rich orange-gold coloration that tends toward crimson hues at select angles of observation. A simply gorgeous coin, words can only begin to describe the aesthetic beauty that this specimen possesses. From the Joseph J. Abbell Collection of U.S. Gold Coins.
