Description

Refreshingly Original 1831 Quarter Eagle in MS 64

1831 $2 1/2 MS 64 PCGS. William Kneass succeeded Robert Scot as Chief Engraver following Scot's death in 1823. While he did not replace Scot's Capped Head Left motif on the quarter eagle, Kneass modified this design and introduced smaller stars and letters, as well as redefined the portraits of Liberty and the eagle. Most importantly, however, the 1829-1834 Capped Head Left type introduced beaded borders and raised rims to the quarter eagle series.
The 1831, along with the 1830 and 1832, is more difficult to locate in all grades than the first-year 1829. As befits a low mintage (4,520 pieces) issue, this spectacular near-Gem appears to have been carefully produced. The surfaces are richly colored in original green-gold color with a noticeably prooflike finish. Every feature except for the eagle's left (facing) shoulder is crisply defined, and there are no abrasions that would seem to rule out an even higher grade. In sum, this is a breathtaking coin whose eye appeal is equally as impressive as its technical quality.
From the Bob Bisanz U.S. Type Set.
