Description

1832 BD-1 Quarter Eagle, AU53
Choice Example of a Very Rare Type

1832 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4, AU53 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/c. Warm light-gold surfaces deepen slightly to yellow-gold towards the periphery, creating stunning coloration. The coloration is more even on the reverse. A few old marks below UNUM on the reverse represent the only abrasions of note. Light wear only impacts the high points. As with all early quarter eagles, survival rates were extremely low due to melting, as these coins contained more than $2.50 worth of gold, making melting the coins more economical than spending them. This, combined with the extremely low mintages of the series, ranging from 3,403 for the 1829 to 4,540 for the 1830, has created one of the most difficult type coins in all of American numismatics.
