    Description

    1832 Quarter Eagle, BD-1, Lightly Circulated AU53
    Modified Obverse Portrait

1832 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4, AU53 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/c. Only trivial marks and light circulation wear appear on the attractive golden-orange surfaces of this late-date quarter eagle, which retains considerable mint luster and shows bold eye appeal. The early quarter eagles were struck in extremely limited numbers -- in some years none at all were made -- and they tended not to circulate extensively, either. Most years were struck from single die pairs; some dies were even used over the duration of multiple years due to the small annual productions. In the case of the reverse die of the 1832, it was carried over from previous uses in 1830 and 1831. The obverse portrait, however, has been slightly modified, either by Mint Engraver William Kneass or possibly Christian Gobrecht while he was still a contract employee. Population for the date: 8 in 53, 32 finer (7/16).
From The Twelve Oaks Collection. (NGC ID# BFWB, Variety PCGS# 45526, Base PCGS# 7672)
