Description

1832 BD-1 Quarter Eagle, MS63
Beautiful Green-Gold Survivor

1832 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4, MS63 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/c. Glorious green-gold surfaces coat devices that lack notable striking weakness. Microscopic abrasions are present, but they are not strong enough to diminish eye appeal. This single die marriage year uses the same reverse die used for all the 1830-1834 issues. Only the 1829 used a different die, providing another design type struck entirely with two reverse dies, a scenario similar to the earlier Large Diameter design type (1821-1827). The 1832 is the first year of the modified obverse hub, which has typically been attributed to William Kneass or Gobrecht. Considering Kneass' propensity to modifying his own work, seen most prominently in the bevy of Master Dies and Master Hubs he created in the Capped Bust half dollar series to try to improve strike from 1824 through 1834, he was likely the culprit for the change.
