    Description

    1833 Two and a Half, BD-1, AU58
    Excellent Color, Reflective Fields

1833 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.5, AU58 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a. Only one die variety is known for the 1833 quarter eagle, and there are fewer than 80 examples believed known. In Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties, John Dannreuther writes: "... all known examples of this entire type number only into the hundreds, as the noted meltings consumed the vast majority of them." Most surviving 1833 coins are in the XF and AU grades, with occasional appearances at the low end of the Mint State spectrum. This near-Mint coin is highly appealing, showing prooflike fields and bold design elements. Violet overtones in the fields complement the orange-gold coloration elsewhere. A rare and important early gold offering. Population: 4 in 58, 14 finer (4/17).
