Description

1834 Capped Bust Quarter Eagle, BD-1, R.6

1834 $2 1/2 Capped Bust Genuine PCGS. Breen-6137, BD-1, R.6. The last of the Capped Bust quarter eagles, produced to a recorded extent of only 4,000 coins. Bass-Dannreuther estimate that only 20 to 24 examples survive today, due to the high melt rates that these old-tenor coins were subjected to. The PCGS number ending in .98 suggests Damage as the reason, or perhaps one of the reasons, that PCGS deemed this coin not gradable. In our opinion, this coin has the details of an AU specimen that has been harshly cleaned. The fields are hairlined on both sides. The color is an appealing golden-orange, however, and a pleasing amount of detail is present, along with some moderate, scattered abrasions. A very rare early gold type coin.(Registry values: P9, N9)

Note for clients in the European Union: This lot is considered by the European Union to be “investment gold”. We believe that it meets the criteria established in Article 344(1), point (2) of Council Directive 2006/112/EC and thus should be exempt from import VAT regardless of the selling price. Any questions or concerns about VAT should be addressed to your accountant or local tax authority.
