Description

1831 BD-1 Quarter Eagle, MS62
Most Available Issue of a Scarce Type

1831 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4, MS62 PCGS. Rich, yellow-gold surfaces are highlighted with green-gold accents. Light abrasions are present, but this is not noticeable at first glance, and none are significant enough to note. Striking weakness is similarly minimal, with only a touch present on the hair strands around the ear and a small section in the feathers just left of the shield.

Bass-Dannreuther's estimated surviving population of between 110 and 125 coins makes this the most available coin in the series. This is of course relative, as the intrinsic value of these coins exceeded $2.50. This ensured that mintages were small and were only produced to order. Evidently, at least one of these orders was used to pay Congressmen, including Missouri Senator Thomas Hart Benton. He was a staunch proponent of hard money, earning him the nickname "Old Bullion." While Senators were the most likely to save their examples, unfortunately for many others, the excessive intrinsic value of these coins made melting a common fate, creating scarcity for collectors today.
