Description

1805 Early Quarter Eagle, BD-1, MS62+
Just Two Coins Certified Finer

1805 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4, MS62+ PCGS Secure. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/a. Dual-Denomination reverse die, used on 1805 to 1807 quarter eagles, and on the entire mintage of 1807 dimes. In total, the amazingly resilient reverse die struck over 10,000 quarter eagles and more than 150,000 dimes without cracking or other failure. This 1805 quarter eagle is one of just 1,781 pieces struck from the sole BD-1 die pair -- first use of the reverse, and the only use of the obverse die until, after it was retired, it was heated for a second time, overdated for use in 1806 (the BD-2 variety), and hardened again.

This high-end MS62 quarter eagle ranks solidly in the 1805 Condition Census by virtue of its PCGS Plus designation. The surfaces display attractive greenish-gold tinges over faintly reflective surfaces. Mint-made adjustment marks concentrate below the date and along the lower left-hand margin, with only a few faint marks spanning across the portrait. The strike is sharp with strong doubling on field star 11. PCGS estimates just 100 to 150 1805 quarter eagles survive in all grades. Population: 4 in 62 (1 in 62+), 2 finer (5/18).
