    Description

    1808 Quarter Eagle
    In-Demand, One-Year Type Coin

1808 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4, PCGS Genuine. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b. The 1808 Capped Bust Left quarter eagle is always in great demand as an elusive, one-year type issue. Only 2,710 quarter eagles were struck in 1808, all from the same pair of dies. This was the only use of both the obverse and reverse dies. John Dannreuther estimates the surviving population at 125-150 examples in all grades.

Like most (if not all) examples seen, this coin shows extremely weak dentilation on both sides, an effect that was probably caused by the design of the coin, rather than any problems with the open collar technology used before 1828. The obverse die cracked early, as most survivors (including this piece) show a crack from the peak of the cap through some stars on the right. Only light wear shows on the well-detailed design elements of this antique-gold survivor. The slightly granular surfaces show signs of repair in the left obverse field, along with minor scratching and some evidence of a light cleaning in the past. Despite the obvious problems, this piece remains a visually attractive representative of this sought-after early gold rarity. In our opinion, it has AU details.
