    Description

    1831 BD-1 Quarter Eagle, Near-Mint
    Rare Capped Head Left Type

1831 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4, AU58 NGC. The Capped Head Left quarter eagle type had tiny mintages. The denomination was struck annually throughout the 1830s, but the 1831 production was just 4,520 pieces, and the highest mintage of the series was the first year 1821, with 6,448 pieces. The coins were overweight relative to the then-current silver-to-gold ratio, and most were soon melted to reclaim their bullion. The NGC Census is undoubtedly padded by resubmissions over the past 30 years, and we suspect that only about 125 1831 two and a halves have survived. Most are not as nice as the present Borderline Uncirculated example, which exhibits frosty motifs and minimally marked surfaces. (NGC ID# BFWA, Variety PCGS# 45525, Base PCGS# 7671)
