1796 B-2 Quarter, Fair 2
Classic Silver Type Rarity

1796 25C B-2, R.3, Fair 2 NGC. Struck for one year only, the Small Eagle quarter is among the rarest silver types. A meager 6,146 pieces were struck, and the denomination again slumbered until 1804, when the Heraldic Eagle was introduced. Bullion depositors at the Mint preferred silver dollars, the reason for the rarity of early quarters. The present silver-gray example has a bold date. Most of the stars are apparent, although faint. Liberty is nicely outlined. The reverse shows greater wear, but portions of the wreath remain near 1:30 and 5 o'clock, and the upper curve of the right (facing) wing is also visible. Among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins (6th edition).
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2015), lot 3844.
