    Description

1796 Draped Bust Quarter, Poor 1
    B-2, Counterstamped
    J. HALSTRICK. / BOSTON

1796 25C B-2, R.3, Poor 1 NGC. J. HALSTRICK. / BOSTON Counterstamp. Brunk H-154. This Browning-2 quarter is almost worn smooth on both sides, although the date area is obligingly clear and fully readable, allowing attribution. The reverse is interestingly counterstamped J. HALSTRICK. / BOSTON, in the style of a silversmith or jeweler. The counterstamp is listed in Dr. Brunk's reference on a 1796 quarter (presumably, this coin) as H-154.

Research shows two possibilities for the counterstamp, the more likely one being Joseph S. Halstrick (1815-1912), who was a Boston silversmith listed in several Boston directories in the mid-1800s. In circa 1850, he was in partnership with James D. Stanwood in the firm Stanwood & Halstrick. His son, Joseph Halstrick, Jr. was born in about 1842. He was also a silversmith in Boston, enlisted in 1861 and wounded at Bull Run, discharged in 1863. In 1876 he was granted a patent for improvement in gas burners. (NGC ID# 23RA, Variety PCGS# 38920, Base PCGS# 5310)
