1796 B-2 Quarter, VF Details
Important One-Year Type
1796 25C B-2, R.3 -- Repaired -- PCGS Genuine. VF Details.
Tompkins Die State 2/1. Charcoal surfaces contain lighter regions
towards the center. Some errant abrasions do not detract from the
eye appeal of this piece, though a scratch in the upper right
obverse is of recent origin. Repairs are noted by PCGS, likely on
the obverse below the ear and below the chin. The 1796 quarter is
the only year the Draped Bust obverse was paired with the Small
Eagle reverse, creating an issue that is always in high demand. Two
die marriages are known, and the present B-2 is the more available
pairing. Tompkins Die State 2/1 has the curl by stars 1 and 2
removed through lapping, but the cracks through the upper right
stars and RTY of LIBERTY have not developed yet. This important
offering would be equally at home in a type collection, quarter
collection by date, or the die marriage collection of a series
specialist.
