1796 B-2 Quarter, VF Details
Single-Year Introductory Type

1796 25C B-2, R.3 -- Reverse Scratched -- NGC Details. VF. The 1796 is the only quarter date struck prior to 1804. It is a one-year type, bearing the Small Eagle design similar to the 1796 half dime, dime, half dollar, and silver dollar. Two die pairs are known, with B-2 moderately less rare than B-1. One way to distinguish the varieties is the placement of star 15. It is close to the bust on B-2, and further away on B-1. This example has light silver-gray toning and a few light thin straight parallel marks on the central reverse. The obverse rim is slightly raised near 4:30. The wings exhibit partial plumage detail.
