Description

1796 B-2 Quarter, VG Details
Rare Early Silver Type Coin

1796 25C B-2, R.3 -- Rim Damage -- PCGS Genuine. VG Details. Tompkins Die State 2/1, obverse lapped. The 1796 quarter is ranked among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins, and is one of the rarest U.S. silver type coins. It is the only date of the Draped Bust, Small Eagle quarter series, because silver depositors at the early U.S. Mint typically preferred payment in silver dollars and half dollars. Although the PCGS insert states the present example has rim damage, in fact the edge is intermittently filed, while the rims show only light filing, mostly on the obverse between 4 and 6 o'clock. The high points and open fields are steel-gray, while protected areas display golden-brown toning.
