Description

1796 Quarter, XF40
B-2, Early Die State

1796 25C B-2, R.3, XF40 NGC. Tompkins Die State 1/1. Two die varieties exist for the low-mintage, first-year 1796 quarters. Both the B-1 and B-2 die pairs have the same reverse, albeit with the B-2 reverse in an earlier die state indicating it was struck first. On this pleasingly toned B-2 example, the obverse is also in its early die state, lacking any signs of die lapping at Liberty's lower curls. Star 15 is distant from the bust and the 9 in the date leans right. On the scarcer B-1 type, star 15 nearly touches the drapery and the 9 in the date leans left. The curl-top 6 is lower on B-1 than on this B-2 example. Iridescent obverse toning includes blue, red, and amber-orange hues throughout the lilac-gray fields and motifs. Grade-consistent circulation wear reveals a few widely scattered light, hair-thin abrasions and tiny marks. Eye appeal is strong for the assigned XF grade. NGC Census (both 1796 varieties combined): 6 in 40, 86 finer (2/26). Among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins.
