Description

1796 B-2 Quarter, XF40
Intermediate Die State

1796 25C B-2, R.3, XF40 PCGS. Tompkins Die State 2/1. The lower hair curls at star 1 are incomplete, showing signs of lapping. There is no evidence of the late-state die cracks through ERTY. The 1796 quarters are one of several single-year type coins in American numismatics. These were the first quarter dollars struck at the Philadelphia Mint, and the mintage was a meager 6,146 coins from two die pairs. This lovely example features golden-brown at the centers, within a frame of deep gold and blue-steel peripheral toning. The strike is nicely centered with bold obverse and reverse borders.
