    1796 Quarter, VF Details
B-1, The Scarcer 'Centered Date' Variety

1796 25C -- Repaired, Whizzed -- NGC Details. VF. B-1, R.4. For a coin that is such a staple today, the quarter denomination got off to a slow start. While other silver denominations such as the half dollar and dollar were first struck in 1794, the quarter did not make its debut until 1796, when it had a paltry mintage of 6,146 pieces total, and there was no encore until 1804. By that time, the standard reverse device for silver had changed from an eagle-in-a-wreath to a larger heraldic eagle behind a shield, and so the quarters of 1796 form a one-year type. This is the scarcer B-1 variety that is identifiable by the date being more centered than the "High Date" B-2. The surfaces are light gray overall with underlying brightness from whizzing. The devices are surrounded by deeper, almost charcoal-gray patina around the devices.(Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 23RA, PCGS# 5310)
