Description

Elusive 1796 Quarter, B-2, VF Details

1796 25C --Tooled, Improperly Cleaned--NCS. VF Details. B-2, R.3. This High 6 variety is more plentiful than the B-1 Low 6 variety, making it an ideal candidate for a collection of coinage designs. The first-year-of-issue 1796 quarters are highly desirable and elusive, with examples finding a ready market in all grades and states of preservation.
This example has light gray surfaces with darker ebony toning in the peripheral areas. The central obverse and reverse exhibit considerable evidence of tooling to remove previous flaws of an unidentified nature, although we see no evidence that this piece was ever holed and plugged. It was probably bent at one time, and the tooling is likely masking some old corrosion.(Registry values: P7)
