Description

Choice VF 1804 Quarter, B-1

1804 25C VF35 PCGS. B-1, R.3. Tompkins Die State 2/3. The dies are clashed and a faint crack connects the tops of the letters in AMERICA. The 1804 is the key date of the Heraldic Eagle type. Its mintage of 6,738 is only a fraction of its 1805 to 1807 successors. Silver depositors of the era preferred larger denominations, such as half dollars and dollars, which explains the rarity of the 1796 and 1804 as well as the absence of intermediate date quarter dollar production. The present Choice VF example has rich tan-gray toning and pleasing sharpness. The strike is consistent except on the two highest reverse stars. There are no remotely relevant marks.(Registry values: P7)
