Description
1806 Draped Bust Quarter, MS62
B-3, Available Early Quarter Variety
1806 25C B-3, R.1, MS62 PCGS. Tompkins Die State 2/2. Those
who collect early quarters by die variety have a field day when
examining the 1806 Browning-3 die pair. Numerous die stages exist,
including some late die states following a remarriage of the dies
after the extremely scarce Browning-4 pieces were struck. All told,
the B-3 die marriage represents the second most common 1806 variety
and is available in virtually all grades. This MS62 example comes
from a middle die state. The coin is weakly struck at the centers,
with the field stars, the eagle's head, and the upper shield only
partially visible. On the obverse, the right-hand stars and dentils
are lightly struck. Nevertheless, the minimally marked surfaces are
clearly Mint State. Pale-gold toning yields to strong silver luster
throughout both the obverse and the reverse. PCGS Population (all
1806 non-overdate varieties): 14 in 62, 26 finer (3/26).Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 23RD, Variety PCGS# 38929, Base PCGS# 5314, Greysheet# 212672)
