Description

1806 B-8 Quarter, Fine 15
Browning Plate Coin
Rarest Die Variety in the Series

1806 25C B-8, R.6, Fine 15 NGC. Ex: Browning Plate Coin. Tompkins Die Stage 1/1. The upright of the E in STATES is past the cloud break, and TE is widely separated. Tompkins calls this the rarest die marriage in the entire Draped Bust series. Perhaps 17 or 18 pieces are known, many with problems. This is the plate coin in the Ard Browning/Walter Breen standard reference, pedigreed by the faint pinscratches on the horizontal shield lines and a tiny planchet flaw behind the lower hair curls. The eagle is relatively well-detailed, while the portrait has just enough wear to prevent a VF designation. Deep lavender patina covers each side.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2003), lot 6618.
