Description

1806/5 Quarter, B-1, MS61
Deep, Multihued Patina

1806/5 25C B-1, R.2, MS61 NGC. Tompkins Die State 2/3. This popular Guide Book variety shows a bold overdate, with an underlying 5 evident within and to the left of the primary 6. The die was previously employed for the 1805 B-4 marriage, then overdated and used for 1806 coinage. The variety commands a premium over its regular-date counterpart -- not only for the dramatic overdate, but also for its rarity in Mint State. This example shows soft luster with highlights of sun-gold, amber, and aquamarine seen amid deep lavender-gray toning over each side. The high points of Liberty's hair curls as well as the eagle's left (facing) talons are slightly soft, but the strike is otherwise pleasing. Grade-contributing abrasions are at a minimum. Census: 2 in 61, 9 finer (3/17).
