Description
1806/5 B-1 Quarter, MS64+
Repurposed Dies of 1805 (B-4)
1806/5 25C B-1, R.2, MS64+ PCGS. CAC. Before the obverse and
reverse dies of 1805 Browning-4 were reused in 1806, a 6 was
punched over the 5 in the obverse die, creating this overdate
variety. There were only a few instances when previously used dies
were modified for further coinage and re-annealed. Others include
1806/5 half dollars, and similar quarter eagles. The reason for
such modification of previously used dies may have been a lack of
available die steel, but why didn't the Mint simply continue using
the unmodified dies as was done so often in the early days of
Philadelphia Mint operations? The 1806/5 B-1 quarter is a plentiful
variety, although few survive as fine as this example. The central
details are sharp with the usual peripheral weakness. Both sides
exhibit Choice surfaces beneath a speckling of light, golden-brown
toning. Population : 5 in 64 (2 in 64+), 3 finer (4/16).Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 23RE, Variety PCGS# 38938, Base PCGS# 5315, Greysheet# 212680)
