1807 Draped Bust Quarter, B-1, MS66
Tied for Second Finest Known
1807 25C MS66 NGC. B-1, R.2. The attribution is made
particularly easy because there are only two die varieties for the
year, different reverses paired with monogamously different
obverses. The B-1 reverse has the first S partially over cloud 2,
while the B-2 reverse shows the first S centered over the first
cloud. The denomination on the B-1 is rather close to the U in
UNITED, and the C in the denomination touches the tail. The obverse
of B-1 shows stars 1 and 2 distant, with a perfect 1 in the date.
The B-2 shows those stars close, with a defective 1.The 1804-1807 Draped Bust quarter series is an underrated one, save for the first-year 1804, a low-mintage issue at 6,738 coins. The Robert Scot design would end after four years in 1807, as the Mint hired the enterprising assistant engraver John Reich to redesign U.S. coinage in that year. While Reich produced his first Capped Bust designs in 1807, they were for the denominations most used by banks, the half dollar and half eagle. After a reported mintage of 220,643 quarters in 1807 (not necessarily all dated 1807), the next quarter issue, finally featuring the Reich Capped Bust design, would be in 1815.
The present MS66 NGC piece is remarkably free from contact on either side, with surfaces that initially present as untoned silver-white, although the eye soon picks up small areas of light-golden color. A few adjustment marks run from the TA of STATES diagonally downward through the center reverse, and that side also shows bold clash marks along with a remarkably sharp strike. This piece is apparently tied for second place in the Condition Census, according to the recent addition to the literature, the Rea-Peterson-Karoleff-Kovach Early Quarter Dollars of the United States Mint. Census: 2 in 66, 1 finer (9/11).
