    Description

    MS67 1973-S Ike Dollar
Struck on a Copper-Nickel Clad Planchet

1973-S $1 --Struck on a Copper-Nickel Clad Planchet--MS67 NGC. 22.5 gm, similar to the 22.68 gm standard weight for a copper-nickel clad planchet. A 40% silver planchets should weigh 24.59 gm, per the 2009 Guide Book. The San Francisco Assay Office (it regained status as a full-fledged mint some years later) only struck Eisenhower dollars for collectors in 1973. Uncirculated dollars (called 'blue' Ikes by collectors) were intended to be struck only in 40% silver. Proofs (or 'brown' Ikes) were struck in both the 40% silver and copper-nickel clad alloys. More than 4.5 million pieces were struck in one of those three combinations, and it is perhaps inevitable that a copper-nickel clad planchet skipped burnishing steps and made its way between Uncirculated dies. Lightly toned in chestnut-gold. Lustrous, well struck, and essentially immaculate.
