1976-D Type Two Ike Dollar, AU55
Struck on a 40% Silver Planchet
Extremely Rare Wrong Alloy Error
1976-D $1 Type Two -- Struck on a 40% Silver Planchet -- AU55
PCGS. 374.5 grains. A Clad Ike should weigh 22.7 grams, or 350
grains. Struck on a planchet intended for 40% silver Type One San
Francisco Bicentennial Ike dollars (Breen-5764). Under Breen-5770,
the entry for the Type Two 1976-D, he mentions that "a silver-clad
specimen turned up about 1978." A perusal of our online auction
archives reveals three 1974-D and three 1977-D Ikes on 40% silver
planchets, but no prior appearances of the present wrong-alloy
variety. Untoned and satiny with a typical strike and minimally
abraded surfaces.(Registry values: N1)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# B76P, PCGS# 7421)
