    Description

Joseph Bates, 1 cent, HB-49, EP-6a, Reed-BA-1FG. FANCYGOODS, Plain Frame. VF/F. None of Joseph L. Bates' encased stamps is common, and among the FANCYGOODS type the one-cent denomination is really the only collectible issue. It is an R.6, and all the other known denominations are at least R.9, so this is an exciting opportunity to fill a hole in a type set. This example is interesting because it appears a canceled stamp was employed in this encasement, making a decidedly uncommon variety all the more special, but hence the split grade. The one-cent Franklin stamp is bright, but has a half dozen black imprints on its face, which are more visually interesting than distracting. The mica is generally Fine, but has several cracks and one tiny hole through to the stamp. The case is sound, and the merchant disc unimpaired except for a slight dig near the middle initial of Bates' name. The encased stamp must be seen to be appreciated. It catalogs $750-$1000.
