Struck on a Silver Dime Blank
(1942)-S Jefferson Nickel -- On a Silver Dime Blank, Scratches
-- NGC Details. Unc. 2.5 gm. This war nickel was struck on a
silver dime blank, and since the planchet was undersized relative
to nickel dies, LIBERTY and STATES OF AMERICA are mostly absent.
Three-quarters of the date is present. Satiny with light chestnut
toning. The finder was curious about the discovery, and entered a
few light pinscratches on Monticello and Jefferson's shoulder.Ex: New England Collection of Jefferson Nickel Errors, Part Three (Heritage, 1/2011), lot 6497, which realized $1,955.
