Description

1943-P Jefferson Nickel, AU58
Struck on a "Steelie" Planchet

(1943)-P 5C Jefferson Nickel -- Struck On a Zinc-Plated Steel Cent Planchet -- AU58 NGC. 2.8 grams. During World War II, copper was essential for the U.S. military effort, and the alloy was removed from the cent during 1943. The cents were unpopular, as they were confused with the dime, which had a similar color and diameter. Copper returned to the cent in 1944, reportedly from spent shell casings. The one-year zinc-plated steel cent planchets were inadvertently used to strike a small number of 1943-P Jefferson nickels. Our online archives show nine prior auction appearances. The present example displays the bottom two-thirds of the date, enough to confirm it is 1943. The Philadelphia mintmark is bold above the dome of Monticello, customary for a War nickel. Struck flush with the collar die at 11 o'clock, with peripheral legends on the lower obverse and upper reverse partly off the flan.
