Description

1795 Half Dollar, VG8
Double Struck With Obverse Rotation
Second S Over D, O-129

1795 50C Flowing Hair Half Dollar, 2 Leaves, Second S Over D, O-129, T-7, R.5 -- Double Struck with Obverse Rotation -- VG8 NGC. The first strike was normal. The coin remained in the coining chamber, the hammer (obverse) die rotated approximately 45 degrees clockwise, the anvil (reverse) die remained stationary, and the coin was struck a second time. The coin's unusual appearance was undoubtedly noticed by its late 18th-century possessors, but a half dollar (more than a day's wages in 1795) was too valuable for most owners to set aside, and so it continued to circulate into the early 19th century. A slight obverse rim knock at 10:30 (relative to the first strike), but the tan-gold and powder-blue surfaces are otherwise exemplary for the designated grade.
