    Impressive 1863 Reverse Die Cap Cent, MS66

    1863 1C Indian Cent--Reverse Die Cap--MS66 PCGS. The olive-tinged golden-brown surfaces of this bold reverse die cap are lustrous and exquisitely preserved. The reverse has needle-sharp detail from repeated strikes, while the central details of the obverse are largely obliterated from the same effect. Still, the peripheral legend and date are entirely readable, as is LIBERTY on the headband. The outer flange has not split, as is found on some 19th century die caps, and a crescent-shaped void visible at 12 o'clock on the reverse has no discernible effect on the opposite side. A prominent and distinctive example of this popular error category, a worthy candidate for a top-notch assemblage of Mint mistakes. Remarkably, if this piece were not an error, it would be tied for the finest certified by either NGC or PCGS (6/07). (NGC ID# 2ANX, PCGS# 62298)
