Description

1865 Three Cent Nickel, MS63
Struck 25% Off Center

1865 3CN Three Cent Nickel -- Struck 25% Off Center -- MS63 NGC. The first-year three-cent nickel was struck in great numbers, to replace silver coins hoarded during the Civil War. But off-center pieces are rare, particularly in Select Mint State. This lustrous and unmarked silver-gray example is off-center toward 2 o'clock, taking OF AMER off the flan, along with a lower right portion of the wreath. Other minor mint errors include prominent clash marks near the date, and lapped design elements on the upper left wreath.
