Description
Off Center 1866 Rays Nickel
1866 5C Rays Shield Nickel--Struck 25% Off Center--VF35 NGC. Struck widely off center toward 11:30, IN GOD WE TRUST and CENTS are fully off the flan. Despite its unusual appearance, this battleship-gray piece circulated long enough to wear some of the shield lines smooth, or perhaps it was a prized pocket piece for its fortunate finder. Several of the stars and leaves retain sharp details. Undoubtedly, Rays Shield Nickels are rare as an off center type.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 22NX, PCGS# 3790, GSID# 2868)
