1866 Shield Nickel With Rays Error
Struck on a Cent Planchet, XF45
1866 Rays Shield Nickel--Struck on a Cent Planchet--XF45
PCGS. This first-year Shield nickel was struck inadvertently on
a bronze cent planchet. Deep chocolate-brown surfaces host devices
that are weakly detailed, hardly a surprise considering the smaller
amount of metal in a cent planchet compared to a nickel.
Surprisingly, no design elements are missing save surrounding
denticles.
