Description

1879 Morgan Dollar, MS62
Partial Collar Error on Blank

1879 $1 Morgan Dollar -- Partial Collar Error on Blank -- MS62 NGC. A double mint error, since the planchet failed to pass through the upset mill to receive a proto-rim, then was struck with a partial collar. The NGC insert states the coin is a broadstrike, but traces of reeding are visible near the reverse rim, indicating that a small portion of the collar die was in place during the strike, though most of the edge is plain. The devices are crisply struck. Toned pearl-white and silver-gray with smooth surfaces save for a minor test mark beneath Liberty's eye.
