    1882 Shield Nickel, AU55
    Struck on a Cent Planchet

1882 5C Shield Nickel -- Struck on a Cent Planchet -- AU55 PCGS. 3.1 gm. A well centered strike with virtually all of the design intact. The chocolate-brown surfaces retain substantial gloss, though the coin likely traded hands a few times (as a cent) before its unusual nature was noticed. Soft definition on the leaves and shield border is due more to the strike than circulation wear. Letters in STATES OF AMERICA exhibit slight spreading toward the rim, characteristic of wrong planchet strikes. Each side has a few minor hair-thin marks.
