Description
1883 Shield Nickel Struck on a Detached Lamination Planchet, MS64
1883 5C Shield Nickel--Struck on Detached Lamination Planchet--MS64 ICG. Almost half of the reverse had a massive lamination fall off prior to striking. Consequently, there was not enough metal remaining to strike up the design elements on either the obverse or reverse. What there is of the coin is lustrous and shows light gray toning. Fully struck in that area as well. An interesting and very curious error, the first we can remember having seen.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 22PE, PCGS# 3813, GSID# 2886)
