Description

1884-CC Dollar--Mated Pair Split Planchet--MS 63. An unusual and very rare type of split planchet error. Allegedly caused by impurities within the planchet which caused a weakness in the struck coin. These impurities later caused the coin to split into two pieces. This error type received a short paragraph in Arnold Margolis' The Error Coin Encyclopedia, page 310, which we believe is worthy of repeating here: "If a coin splits after the strike, and the two parts of the coin are located and can be shown to fit together perfectly, they make a most desirable addition to an error coin collection. These mated pairs are often featured in error coin displays or exhibits."
This particular coin was originally housed in a GSA holder. When the collector who ordered it from the first GSA Sale received the coin he thought it merely had a severe scratch. When it was removed from the holder it turned out to be a broken planchet. The coin was featured in a photograph in "Collector's Clearinghouse" in the January 14, 1976 issue of Coin World. Oddly, though photographed, there is no mention of the coin or this type error in the accompanying article on defective-blank errors.
The coin itself is a lovely, frosted uncirculated piece that is still mostly brilliant but does exhibit light iridescence on each side. Just for the record, it is from the VAM-2 dies.
