Description

1898-O Morgan Dollar, MS63
Retained Laminated Planchet

1898-O $1 Morgan Dollar -- Laminated Planchet -- MS63 PCGS. A boomerang-shaped lamination detached from the obverse after the strike. The lamination was located between 3 and o'clock. Remarkably, the lamination survived its separation from the rest of the coin, and is housed in a separate PCGS holder with the same grade and a consecutive certification ID. Both the coin and lamination are offered in the present lot. Such laminations typically occur when gas is trapped within the coinage strip. Unexpectedly nice for its MS63 grade, the coin is lustrous and nicely struck with medium peach-gold, lilac, and sky-gray toning.(Registry values: P1, N69)
