Very Rare 1904 Double Eagle Error

1904 $20 --Double Struck in Collar--MS 63 PCGS. Only rarely do we have the opportunity to offer an error gold coin in one of our sales. Quality control was much stricter in the production of gold coins, and errors, when they were made, were generally caught prior to leaving the Mint. This particular error would have been a more difficult one to detect. All the design elements are present, and nothing glaring is present such as an off-center strike. Many coins that are double struck in collar show a partial collar strike. While this is evidence of genuineness when found on a coin such as this, the lack of it does not necessarily indicate fraudulence. What happens sometimes is that the collar may be slightly worn and it may accept a struck (and therefore slightly expanded) coin as it would a planchet. That is apparently what happened with this piece as there is no indication (as much as we can tell with the coin in the encasement) of a partial collar striking. The devices on each side are partially obliterated by the second striking. The surfaces are minimally abraded and the mint luster shows much reddish patina.
