Description

Extremely Rare Dropped Letter Error on a Proof Liberty Nickel

1904 5C Nickel--Dropped Letter--PR64 NGC. On the rim above the ME in AMERICA on the reverse there is a part of a star. The star is sharp and, of course, incuse in the rim. Dropped Letter errors are really quite rare and this is the first we have offered in some time. Such errors are caused when there is a planchet lamination on another coin that covers a letter, digit, or other part of the devices. If the lamination, which is over the device, falls off the struck coin it then may fall onto the reverse die. When that happens it is struck into the next planchet. Since the "dropped letter" has already been struck, its impression on the next coin will be incuse. Now, factor in that this is a proof coin. Because of the care taken in their manufacture, very few proofs have planchet laminations in the first place which makes a dropped letter a near impossibility. But here is one. The fields are deeply mirrored and the coin is brilliant throughout.
