Description

Double Struck 1908 Indian Cent

1908 1C Indian Cent--Double Strike, Second Strike 55% Off Center--MS62 Brown NGC. The second strike is off-center at 12:30, yielding two complete dates. Regrettably, the position of the two strikes does not allow viewing of the mintmark area, thus we cannot be certain if this was struck in Philadelphia or San Francisco. A faint die line connects the top of the T in UNITED to the border, almost exactly above the left edge of the upright of that letter. If a normally struck example could be located with this same die line, it may help in making a geographical determination. The general appearance is reminiscent of Philadelphia Mint issues, as it does not display the usual "woodgrain" texture of the San Francisco Mint issues. The surfaces are olive-brown with faded orange color and iridescent toning.
