Struck on a Cent Planchet
1920 5C Buffalo Nickel -- Struck on a Cent Planchet -- AU55
PCGS. 3.13 grams. Over the years, Heritage has auctioned two
dozen or so 1920 Buffalo nickels struck on cent planchets. It
appears that a bin of cent planchets was inadvertently fed into a
press striking nickels that year, and a number were struck before
the mistake was recognized by the coiner. The present
wrong-planchet error made its way into circulation, but displays
only a hint of wear. The strike is soft on the bison's hair, though
the devices are fairly sharp overall. The date and UNITED STATES OF
AMERICA are partial due to the smaller flan, and LIBERTY is
distorted from collar-unrestrained flan expansion during the
strike.
