1943 Lincoln Cent Struck on a Cuba Centavo Planchet MS62

1943 1C Lincoln Cent--Struck on a Cuba 1 Centavo Planchet--MS62 PCGS. Few among us can afford to purchase a Mint State 1943 copper cent, no matter that it would be the highlight of even an advanced collection of Lincoln cents. But off-metal alternatives are available, such as a 1943 cent struck on a silver dime planchet. Even scarcer and more exotic wrong planchet errors are possible. The United States struck coins for nine foreign countries in 1943, partly because World War Two made it difficult for countries like Australia and Fiji to receive coinage from their usual sources. The present 1943 cent was struck on a Cuban centavo planchet. The 2.3 gram brass planchet was smaller than the expected 2.70 zinc-coated steel planchet, and the piece is off-center toward 2 o'clock. Part of the 3 in the date is off the flan, although enough is present to confirm the digit. Traces of corrosion are expected for the brass composition. The satiny olive-green surfaces are unmarked, and the strike is crisp save for Lincoln's shoulder. This 1943 "brass cent" is the next best thing to a 1943 copper cent.
