    1943 Lincoln Cent, XF40
Struck on a Silver Dime Planchet

1943 1C Lincoln Cent -- Struck on a Silver Dime Planchet -- XF40 PCGS Secure. 1943 was the year that Lincoln cents were struck on zinc-plated steel planchets, to reserve copper for the war effort. Since a 1943 cent struck on a silver dime planchet looked similar upon cursory inspection to a regular issue cent of that year, it is not surprising that this coin remained in circulation for a few years. Eventually, a collector noticed the proximity of WE TRUST and UNUM to the rim, and those legends exhibit the distortion associated with metal flow toward the border. The strike is well-centered but tight to the edge on the right of both the obverse and reverse, a function of the dime-sized planchet that is smaller than a cent by 1.1 mm. Almost certainly the planchet was intended for a Mercury dime. The silver-gray surfaces show moderate wear but are largely unblemished. Only a handful of examples are known of this amazing off-metal error -- Mike Byers' World's Greatest Mint Errors reference suggests approximately 25 examples exist.
